Enzymes, Food Choices and Digestive Health Can Affect Skin Quality

Most people don't make a connection between what they eat and how their skin looks. That is a big mistake. Whoever said "You are what you eat" was right. Enough sabotage in the diet, or simply a weakened digestive system, will translate into a skin condition in many cases.

What type of skin conditions might be caused by improper digestion? It could be acne, it could be eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or any other breed of dermatitis.

How do you know whether or not your digestive system is working optimally? The most evident symptoms of disorder would be stomach upset, bloating, gas, abdominal pain, rumbling noises, nausea, vomiting or a burning sensation after eating.

Another sign of digestive issues are breakouts along the jawline. If you break out regularly on or beneath the jawline, it is very possible you need to detoxify and support your digestive tract.

Certain foods and beverages can cause indigestion because they are irritating to the digestive tract. Examples would include alcohol, vinegar, caffeine, spicy, greasy or refined foods (and we eat way too many refined foods.)Any food to which we are sensitive can cause inflammatory isses. The only way to really know if you are allergic or sensitive to a food, other than testing, is to detoxify the body or engage in an elimination diet (where you knock out most potentially allergenic foods for a period of 3 days or more, and then reintroduce one food every 3 days, monitoring the body (including skin, mood, energy levels, etc. ) carefully.

Further, if a food is not digested completely or properly, it can leave the stomach partially undigested. Upon entering the small intestines, it can ferment there, producing hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which can lead to the discomforts of indigestion listed above.

Psychological factors such as stress, anxiety or disappointment can further disturb digestion, by either weakening the mechanism that controls stomach contractions or reducing the amount of digestive enzymes you secrete.

Many of these conditions can be managed by increasing the output of digestive enzymes. Hydrachloric Acid, which is produced by the glands of the stomach, is a powerful substance necessary for the proper digestion of foods. Insufficient amounts can lead to indigestion. In fact, as we age, we often produce less and less of this important chemical.

A simple test can help you determine if you need more hydrachloric acid: Ater a meal, take one tablespoon of either apple cider vinegar or fresh lemon juice. If your indigestion disappears, then you need more stomach acid. If it gets worse, than you have too much acid. In the latter case, you should not be taking any supplements that contain hydrachloric acid.

How does all of this affect the skin?

Food that lingers in the digestive tract any longer than necessary will produce toxic by-products. The buildup of toxins in an unhealthy colon has been linked to skin disorders such as psoriasis. Speedy digestion is step one to maintaining optimal health and optimal skin.

Further, many of us have food sensitivities or food allergies that we are completely unaware of. For example, sensitivity to gluten is widespread (gluten being found in wheat, especially pronounced in refined wheat products.) A gluten-free diet is often remarkably successful in reducing symptoms and controlling conditions such as eczema and acne.

Tips to combat indigestion:

* Take Acidopholus: this "friendly" bacteria can help restore balance to the digestive tract, which often contributes to digestive disorders. I realize how unpleasant this sounds, but enemas made with distilled water and acidophilus will in most cases rapidly eliminate the gas associated with indigestion.

* Avoid dairy products, junk food and processed foods. This can cause mucus formation, which may result in inadequate protein digestion.

* If you are certain that your digestion is sluggish proper food combination can promote rapid digestion. Proteins and starches generally do not combine well, and neither do fruits and vegetables. Foods containing fruits or sugars should not be eaten at the same meal as proteins or starches.

* Antacids are frequently taken to relieve the discomfort of indigestion, but they can make matters worse. They often neutralize the acid in the stomach, preventing digestion and interfering with the absorption of nutrients. Antacids are useless for gas and bloating.

* Digestive enzymes can be supplemented in the diet. When taken after meals, these can accelerate digestion and reduce or eliminate the symptoms of indigestion.

Supplementing with Digestive Enzymes can make you feel like a new person! Your meal will digest more quickly, and you will feel much more energetic during the day (a good way to avoid the 2:00 p.m. afternoon slump so many of us deal with every day!) Check out my Similase Plant Enzymes, I never eat a meal without them!

While the benefits of efficient digestion are many, the distinct bonus is clear, radiant skin as well as increased vitality.
